Carbon Literacy

Human solutions to human challenges

Are you interested, intrigued or feeling overwhelmed by climate change but unsure where to start? Would you like to make a real difference both at work and in your personal life? Our Carbon Literacy courses are practical, engaging and designed for Marketers, communications professionals, organisations and agencies who want to take action and drive real impact.

What is Carbon Literacy?

Carbon Literacy means understanding the carbon costs of everyday actions - from your morning coffee to your commute and your employee engagement to how you differentiate yourself through your communications. Knowing how to make smarter, more informed choices which lower your carbon impacts and support your organisations sustainability agenda is fast becoming a critical part of our working skillset.

Why should you care?

We all have a responsibility when it comes to protecting the planet we live on and every role has sustainability in it, whether you realise it or not.

What’s in it for organisations?

Carbon Literacy is highly effective in many ways:

  • Cutting costs and carbon – you’ll learn how reducing emissions often means reducing waste, increasing efficiencies, cost savings and greater performance.

  • You are effectively future-proofing your business – customers, employees, and investors are demanding sustainability, so becoming Carbon Literate is a step towards making your organisation sustainable over the long-term.

  • It’s a great way to bring together and engage your teams – empowering them with knowledge they can use at work and home - to support collective action.

  • You’ll stand out – Carbon Literacy is more than just a course, it’s a Certification which shows you’re serious about climate action.

What’s in it for individuals?

Take control and become part of the solution:

  • You’ll learn practical steps to shrink your carbon footprint and add value to the organisations you work for.

  • A certification and a highly sort after skillset.

  • Boost your career - sustainability skills are in demand across every industry, your Carbon Literacy skills go with you wherever you choose to work.

  • Lead by example - confidence to talk about climate, inspire friends, family and colleagues to take action too.

  • Lower your footprint – we all need to be thinking more about how we live, travel, eat and use energy. You’ll gain plenty of insights and ideas on your journey to becoming a certified Carbon Literate citizen.

What’s in the training?

We don’t do jargon-filled lectures. Our virtual and online deliveries are interactive, relatable, and filled with discussion. We’ll cover:

  • The big picture - how carbon emissions drive climate change (and why it matters to you).

  • Your carbon footprint – you’ll see the impact of daily choices both in your personal life and at work (some surprises guaranteed!).

  • The output is real solutions – as part of the certification you’ll commit to one personal action and one group action based on your role*, something you can take forward and support making a practical difference. We’ll ensure you leave with a clear idea of what you can do next.

*your action can be applied to another area of your life if you cannot directly make an impact in your role. We will work with you on this on an individual basis.

Who’s it for?

Everyone! Whilst we specialise in Carbon Literacy for marketing and communications professionals (individuals and teams), we’ve also trained cross-functional teams within organisations and agencies. Whether you’re a CEO, Marketer, sustainability lead, administrator or HR professional, this isn’t just for environmental, green or sustainability teams, climate responsibility sits with all of us.

What people are saying…

  • “Having knowledge in the sustainability space, the online training was a great mix of media – sometimes you can listen, sometimes you can read, sometimes you can watch. It was all very user friendly – and each module felt like it was just the right length.”

  • “The training really helped us to think above and beyond the things we are already doing – opened our minds to what else we could be doing.”

FAQS

How do the Virtual or Online versions of Carbon Literacy Training differ?

The content for Carbon Literacy certification has to meet certain criteria to align with formal certification from The Carbon Literacy Trust. All our Carbon Literacy courses, whether they are delivered virtually, fully online or face to face, and in some cases, tailored, are compliant with the required criteria for certification. Therefore, the content theme is the same, however, to ensure that the online path meets best practice in ‘e-learning’ methodology to effectively embed learning, and keep it entertaining and engaging - there is a blend of content to enjoy - video, audio, interactive game, selection, reflection points etc.

How does the Certification Process work if I take the course Online?

Once you purchase the course, you will be sent an email to log in to our learning portal (check spam as it’s automated from our learning system, not us). Once you login, you can then access the portal and your learning material to pace the course in the way that fits with you. Once you have completed all Modules, we ask you to email us so that we can set up you 1 hour facilitated discussion, virtually via Zoom. The discussion is a critical part of the program, as it enables you to ask questions, sense-check your certification evidence form ideas and ensure you’re on the right track to certification. Once this call has taken place, we agree a deadline date for you to send your completed Evidence Form to us, and then we take on all the administration of submitting your Evidence Form and reverting to you regarding your Certification.

How long does certification take?

Once you submit your Evidence Forms by the due date, all forms are sent in one batch to the CLT (Carbon Literacy Trust) where they are independently reviewed and assessed. The CLT usually take 2-3 weels to turnaround certification.

What’s the Process for Teams of Employees wanting to Certify as Carbon Literate

Online: If your team is taking the training course via our online portal, you send to us a list of all names and email addresses and these are added to the portal. Each employee is then sent their login information. We suggest that there is a ‘Team Lead’ to centrally coordinate with who is ‘in-house’ - this enables your team to liaise with them, rather than liaise with us if they have any questions. This streamlines lines of communication.

The team will then be advised of a start time, end time - for example, given 4 weeks to complete the online learning modules in their own time. Between the start date and end date, organisations can keep in touch with their employees to via a set of reminder emails which can be tailored and shared to your team to keep them motivated and timely.

As part of the certification process, a 1 hour virtual facilitated discussion is necessary. We agree a date and share the Zoom link and invite to all employees (either directly or via the Team Lead). This is usually organised about a week prior to the submission deadline.

Evidence Form submissions are then shared to the Team Lead by the agreed specified date and then we take on all the administration of certification via The Carbon Literacy Trust.

Virtual or In-Person:

The training is usually executed either in one day or over two half days. Team members are made clear of the agreed submission deadline - usually 2 weeks post the training, and the facilitated discussion will have already taken place within the structure of the content delivery.
